Multiculturalism in Indian

Literatures IN ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Sub-Areas:      a) Women’s Writing and Feminist Movement

            b) Dalit Writing and Movements

                        c) Bhakti Movements and Literature

The project seeks to bring out the diversity of Indian literatures of different languages with a view to relating them to the matters of culture, ideology, nationality, ethnicity, social class and/or gender as part of the Indian multicultural ethos. The perspective of multiculturalism enables it to explore the deep structures of meaning, value systems, beliefs underlying art and literature. Multiculturalism questions the dominant ways of seeing things and presents alternative views of the world. An insurrectionary imagination driven by its hunger for new processes of art and protest is at the heart of multiculturalism or cultural activism. The Project, therefore, seeks to examine the ideological issues involved in the three major thrust areas stated above to examine the gender issues, Dalit problem and the mass movement of Bhakti which sought to transcend the barriers of caste, creed and colour. It highlights how they have played an active role in bringing about the social and cultural change. As the project is interdisciplinary and comparative in its import, studies will be undertaken in collaboration with the faculty of other departments, especially the departments of Telugu and other languages and the departments of Cultural studies and Comparative Studies of the Universities like University of Hyderabad, English and Foreign Languages University, Potti Sriramulu Telugu University, Hyderabad, Jadhavpur University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, etc.

Organizing Seminars

The Department intends to organize a minimum of two seminars/workshops a year on themes having a close bearing on thrust areas. The seminar participants will be drawn from different disciplines of literary and cultural studies identifying those who have made significant contribution to the relevant areas. The findings of the seminar will be used for sharpening the research tools and strategies on the thrust areas.

Lectures and group discussions

The Department will periodically organize lectures, symposia and group discussions on multiculturalism focusing on the ideological issues of caste, gender, religion, and the social movements affecting Indian literatures written in different languages and regions with a view to bringing out the cultural diversity of our country. Wherever the translations in English of the Indian writers are not available, the faculty will undertake the task depending on their expertise and drawing on expert advice and help.  It is hoped, that the project will enlighten the students and scholars about the nature of Indian literatures, the ideological and cultural deep structures lying behind them, and the way the multiculturalism of the writers has questioned the established beliefs and systems to uphold humanism based on the values of liberty, equality, and fraternity.

Linking thrust areas of research with teaching in-puts

The Department will use the knowledge and expertise gained out of its research activities as inputs in teaching various courses in the Department. It has already been offering papers namely Regional Literatures in Translation, Women’s writing and Indian Classics in translation as part of curriculum. Research will be encouraged on dalit literature, women’s writing, comparative literature, and translation of Telugu literary texts into English. Further, it also proposes to include courses and papers covering the thrust areas in the curriculum.

Publications

The Department will publish papers and prepare monographs on the findings of research on the thrust areas.

Year-wise plan of the work proposed:

I Year (2011):  Keeping the thrust areas in view, studies will be undertaken by visiting libraries to collect the primary and secondary sources and organizing seminars. Books on the thrust areas will be procured for the Project. Project Fellows and Project Assistants will be recruited for the purpose. As the project is of interdisciplinary nature, meetings will be held with the experts in different Indian languages with a view to identifying major poets, novelists, short-story writers and playwrights who with their multiculturalism have contributed to social and cultural change.

II Year (2012):  During this year, the focus will be on Women’s writings in different languages of our country and their contribution to the Feminist movement, their attitudes and beliefs questioning the male chauvinism and existing cultural practices to bring about women’s emancipation. Wherever necessary, the translation of relevant texts will be undertaken. Workshops/Seminars/Symposia will be conducted on Women’s writing in India to explore the ideological and cultural base behind its literary postures. The focus will be on cultural practices leading to gender discrimination, male chauvinism, besides different forms of social movements including Feminism and their impact on literature.

III Year (2013) : During this year, focus will be on Dalit writing in Indian literatures. Meetings of the scholars will be held to identify the regional literatures of different languages such as Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Bengali in English translation, especially of the dalit writers for study. Studies will be undertaken to study major themes and perspectives of these regional writers. Focus of these studies will be on social injustice, class, caste, gender discrimination vis-à-vis cultural practices and beliefs. The studies will examine how multiculturalism of the dalit writers has questioned the dominant cultural and religious practices and beliefs. Interviews with dalit creative writers, critics and other academics will be conducted to impart authenticity to the conclusions of the study. Students and research scholars will be involved in the discussions of the regional writers prescribed for their study. Academic meetings with experts will be held to discuss the introduction of select writers as part of the syllabus.

IV Year (2014) :  Meetings, seminars, workshops, and symposia will be held to identify and discuss the bhakti literature in the Indian literatures. The historical, cultural and philosophical background of the bhakti literature and its protest against caste, class discrimination, the significance of its contribution to the social reform and change will be studied. The close relationship between this literature, culture and music will be explored. Academic meetings will be conducted to discuss the introduction of important writings of bhakti movements in the syllabus at M.A. and M. Phil levels.

V Year (2015): The findings of the studies undertaken on the thrust areas will be finalized after discussions at various levels with experts in the areas. Interactive interdisciplinary sessions will be organized. Seminars and symposia are organized to discuss the findings. The findings of the project and interviews with creative writers will be published in the form of articles and books. Translations undertaken as part of the project will be published in the form of books. New areas of research will be identified for further research.

Major ongoing areas where linkages with industries have been established:

Train the train programmes are organized for teachers using the expertise of different Corporate agencies. Spoken English classes are conducted under CELT for improving the communication skills of not only the campus students but also others. Experts are drawn from different industries and sectors as members of the Board of Studies to understand the needs of the industry and train the students accordingly to improve their employability skills.

Research and technology developed by the Department and output of which has been used by user departments/organizations:

The articles and books written by the teachers of the department are consulted by research scholars and cited by critics in their works. Thus they are useful for knowledge dissemination/development in teaching. Innovative teaching methods are experimented at Centre for English Language Training. Textbooks and study material are developed by the faculty for the undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
