The origin of the Department can be traced back  to 1984 when Microbiology was one of the specializations and two years later took the shpe of M.Sc. Microbiology in 1993-94. To guide and supervise B.Sc. and M.Sc. MIcrobiology courses, a need was felt and an independent department was established in 2003-2004. Research agencies like UGC, CSIR, DBT, AICTE, ICMR sponsored the research projects by the teachers. The department, through its research, is interacting with industry and research establishments to train the students. It has two independent laboratories, library and a seminar hall.
