The Department of Commerce and Business Management was started during the academic year 1968-69 as one of the oldest Departments in the Post-graduate center established by Osmania University. The Department, at that time, had a faculty strength of 7 and was offering M.Com. course with an intake of 20 students. In 1976, this Post-Graduate center was upgraded as full-fledged University and named as Kakatiya University. In 1978, the Department started one year Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM) as an evening programme to cater to the needs of local graduate employees working in Government Departments and business organizations. Keeping in view the increasing demand for management education, the Department started MBA course in 1985 with an intake of 20 students. To provide specialized skills in the area of finance and Accounting, the Department introduced MFA (Master of Finance and accounting) Course at the University PG College. Apart from these courses at the University PG College. Apart from these courses, the Department is offering M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes to promote research in the discipline of Commerce and Management.
Over the years, the Departmen could achieve significant progress in terms of courses offered and research programmes undertaken to cater to the needs of business education in Telangana region. AT present, B.Com. BBM, B.Com. (Computers), B.Com. (Advertising and Sales Management), B.Com. (Corporate Secretaryship), B.Com. (Tax Procedures and Practices), B.A. (Commerce) are beign offered at undergraduate level through the constitutent and affiliated colleges of Kakatiya University. AT PG level, M.Com., MFA and MBA courses are being offered apart from M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes.
On research front, the Department has made commendable progress. Most of the staff members are actively engaged in their research projects sponsored by various funding agencies viz., UGC, ICSSR, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh etc., So far 103 M.Phil. and 97 Ph.Ds have been awarded under the guidance of the Faculty. As a result of sustained research efforts of the staff and research scholars, the Department could develop specialization in the areas of marketing, cooperation, industrial relations etc. During VIII plan period, the UGC has recognized “Rural Marketing” as the thrust area of the Department.
The Department has been actively engaged in organizing several State and National level seminars, symposia, conferences and workshops on various topics of contemporary value. So far, 2 National level conferences, 8 seminars, one workshop and two symposia have been organized in the Department.
As a mark of successful completion of 25 years, the Department celebrated its Silver Jubilee and hosted prestigious XLVIII All India Commerce Conference in 1994. In this connection, an Alumni Association formed in 1994 by the students of the department.
The department as successfully organized two refresher courses sponsored by UGC and one training programme sponsored by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. Besides this, the department also organized a workshop on “Quantitative Techniques” for the benefit of the teachers in the constituent, Government and Affiliated colleges.
