Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary course which encompasses all basic science subjects. It is a Technology with profuse business applications. The national and international problems and greviences pertaining to Food Production, Animal Husbandry, Medical and Health etc are addressed by Biotechnology

The need of the hour is to impart education and training in Biotechnology at University level (Human Resource Development).Kakatiya University, Warangal has taken initiative in this direction and introduced M.Sc. Biotechnology in 2000.

M.Sc. Biotechnology course was started by & in the Department of Botany, Kakatiya University campus when Prof.Vidyavathi was Vice Chancellor, Kakatiya University and Prof.K.Subhash, was the Head, Department of Botany. Theory and Practicals classes for first batch of M.Sc Biotechnology (2000-2001) students were conducted in the first floor of the Department of Botany.

INAUGURATION OF THE COURSE

The Course was inaugurated on 23rd August, 2000 by Prof. Asis Datta

Vice Chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Prof.Vidyavathi, the then Vice Chancellor, Kakatiya University, Warangal, was the Chief Guest and Prof. Jafar Nizam, Former Vice Chancellor, Kakatiya University, Warangal was the Guest of Honour.

OBJECTIVES

  • To Train Students in Biotechnology at Post-Graduate level.
  • To Create Intelligent and Skilled Human Resource to Cope up with the Development of Science and Industry
  • To Develop Student Force to enter into Modern Research and Technology.

ADVISORY COMMITTEE:

The advisory committee was constituted by the university on 03 rd May 2003 to make suggestions in the development of curriculum and to evaluate the progress from time to time. The committee meets once in an year. The committee constitutes:

Biotechnology course was elevated to an independent Department on 17th January 2004

An ad-hoc departmental committee was constituted by the university to run the Department.

Mode of selection

Selection of students to M.Sc Biotechnology Course is through Kakatiya University Common Entrance Test (KUCET).Roster system is followed for Self Finance seats and Merit is followed for Sponsored seats. The Biotech Company or Industry, will give a sponsor letter stating that the company is paying for the candidate education and training and he will be absorbed by the company after completion of the course.

Eligibility for Admission
Students with Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Genetics and Microbiology degree are eligible to apply for admission. Thirty eight colleges under Kakatiya University Jurisdiction are offering three years B.Sc Biotechnology. Students from this course also appear for the KUCET.

Syllabus for Entrance Test
Entrance test is conducted in Plant Physiology, Cell Biology, Ecology, Genetics, Biotechnology, Microbiology and Biochemistry.

Model Paper for Entrance Test

The entrance test paper is of 100 marks .It consists of Multiple Choice (30 Questions, one mark each ), Fill in the Blanks (30 Questions, 1 marks each), Definitions(20 Questions one and a half mark each) and Yes or No Type Questions(10 Questions, one mark each ).

Note:

Several students avail educational loan facility from nationalized banks. The Department of Social Welfare, Govt. AP pay the tuition fee of the SC and ST students
